The official mosquito tone that kids use with their cell phones today allows them to text message and call one another without alerting adults in the area. How the mosquito ringtone came to be is interesting, turns out the sound was actually created by british shop keepers that were trying to keep teens out of their stores. The store keepers created what is sometimes called "teen buzz" or "teen repellent" which was simply a high pitched sound usually around 17 Khz that was not audible to adults however can be heard by kids and is quite annoying. The idea was that the high pitched sound would hopefully drive away the kids, however that same sounds has now become the infamous ringtone that was made by young teens and cell phone users.
Soon after the creator of the original Teen Buzz ( Howard Stapleton) realized that money could be made from such a mobile phone ringtone and began working on a newer version that he sells online for three pounds. Howard continues to create and work on additional "silent" tones and mosquito noises ...quite an interesting story really.
